  5. house?" Last Wednesday, the question was put to a vote in the
  6. lower house of parliament, and Singh lost. Two days later, with
  7. the backing of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, his job was
  8. taken over by Chandrashekhar, who broke away from Singh's Janata
  9. Dal party on Monday.

  11.     Singh's government fell after only 11 months when issues of
  12. caste and religion erupted into violence over rival Hindu-Muslim
  13. claims to the site of a mosque at Ayodhya. Winning the support
  14. of less than half of the 140 Janata Dal members, Chandrashekhar
  15. will be dependent upon the opposition Congress (I) Party and its
  16. allies.

  18.     Many wonder how long such a fragile arrangement can last.
  19. The new government faces a growing economic crisis and the same
  20. divisive issues that brought down Singh. Chandrashekhar will
  21. somehow have to cool down tempers raised by Singh's plan to set
  22. aside government jobs for lower castes, but he will not find it
  23. any easier to settle the future of the disputed holy site at
  24. Ayodhya.
